Last Friday night in Knox City was one for the record books, as the visiting Spur Bulldogs scored 104 points in a rout against the hometown Greyhounds. Yes, you read that right—104 points—and a mercyrule ending even so.
According to county historian Harry Bob Martin, it’s been 90 years since a Spur football team scored over 100 points— the Bulldogs scored 180 against Lorenzo in the 1930s back when they played 11-man football.
The Bulldog defense stuck first at the 7:11 mark after Le’Zhane Walker intercepted a Bryson Callaway pass and two plays later took it 14 yards for Spur’s first score. Ryan Davis’ pass to Walker for the extra point was good.
Nick Ortiz would intercept Callaway again with 2:28 seconds to play in the first quarter and scored. The Dawgs ended the quarter up 13–0.
Walker would intercept Callaway again and ran in for Spur’s third score. The pointsafter kick by Kayden Martinez was good, and the Bulldogs never looked back as they controlled the rest of the game.
Callaway then scored for the Greyhounds after a 26-yard sprint, but the extra-points kick was no good.
The onside kickoff by Caleb Arrieta was retrieved by Walker, who galloped 45 yards to score again. Martinez’ extrapoints kick was good, and the Dawgs were up 29 to 6 with 6:33 to play in the half.
The Greyhounds would score twice when Tristin Baxter ran for 11 yards for the touchdown and Callaway ran 50 yards for the score, with Callaway’s kick good. The Greyhounds narrowed the gap to a 29–20 score, but that was as close as they would get all night.
Arrieta would attempt another onside kick when Walker picked it up and scored from 45 yards out. Martinez’ extrapoints kick was good.
The Greyhounds scored next, when Callaway passed to Kobe Roberts for the touchdown, and the point after kick by Kendall Smith was good.
Walker scored again with18 seconds in the half on a 25-yard hustle. Davis’ pass to Ortiz was good for the extra point, and the Dawgs when to the fieldhouse up 44–28.
Le’Zhane Walker would score first in the third quarter on a 26-yard run, and Martinez’ kick for extra points was good.
Callaway would next pass to Roberts for a 23-yard Greyhounds touchdown, and Kendall Smith’s extra kick was good.
Cory Hamilton would score the next two touchdowns for the Dawgs, one for 39 rushing yards and the next for 11 yards, and Martinez’s extra-points attempt was good.
Callaway would next pass to Cameron Hernandez for 60 yards and a touchdown.
Hamilton would end the third quarter with a 75-yard blitz touchdown and an effective extra-points kick by Martinez kick. The quarter would end Spur 74, Knox City 42.
To start the fourth, Walker galloped 43 yards and the score, with Martinez’ extra kick good.
Baxter scored next on a 46-yard run. Smith’s onside kick was scooped up by the Bulldogs’ Walker and returned for 50 yards and a touchdown, with Martinez’ extra points good.
Callaway’s pass to Baxter was good for a 50-yard run to score, and the kick by Smith was good.
Walker would score the final two touchdowns of the battle, sprinting 22 yards and 52 yards to end the game 104–56, called by the mercy rule with 4:30 left to play.
On the game, both Le’Zhane Walker and Cory Hamilton racked up some impressive rushing stats, with 184 and 154 yards respectively. The Bulldogs possessed the ball 14:13 minutes and the Greyhounds 33:34 minutes. The Greyhounds turned the ball over five times, each resulting in a Bulldog touchdown.
Next week marks the final game of the Bulldogs’ regular season, with Senior Night at home against Paducah, 7:30 p.m. at Jones Stadium in Spur.
