Spur council considers police housing, approves website, new phones

In a special meeeting April 29, 2021, the Spur city council made several decisions regarding technical matters and introduced a new one—options for hiring incentives in the police department search—for consideration.

Andrew Adams of Cap Rock Telephone was on hand to show office telephone models and present options for upgrading a system that lacks capabilities for transferring calls or setting up conference calls, which dates to the 1990s. Replacement parts and handsets are hard to come by now, Adams explained. Council opted for a new, digital powerover-Ethernet PBX system with 9 phones to VOIP push-button phones, same as the system the telephone cooperative itself uses. The price for this option would be around $5,200.

Jeff Sturgis presented a proposal to customize and populate a templated website (provided and hosted by the same firm that currently handles the city’s utility billing) to suit the City of Spur’s informational needs at a cost of $20 per hour (significantly less than his going rate), with no certain number of hours stipulated. The proposal was approved.

Regarding Spur’s current employment posting for a police chief, council extended the deadline through May 27. City secretary Lisa Forma read the help wanted ad, which included terms of a $36,000 annual salary and a requirement that the successful applicant live within the city limits. Mayor Louise Jones then introduced discussion among council, with audience questions and input, regarding the possibility of arranging city-provided housing as a supplement to the base salary. After brief discussion the matter was tabled for more in-depth study.

Last on the agenda was approval for the city to offer for sale two land parcels on West A motion was approved to solicit sealed bids for the purchases for a period of bids for three weeks

The meeting, which had been called to order at 5:30 p.m., adjourned at 6:15 p.m. Present were Mayor Jones and council members Crystal Leary, Rhea Melton, Fronye Morris, Laidy Vasquez, Glenda White and Don Wright.
