At its regular monthly meeting Feb. 21, 2023, the Spur City Council expedited a weighty agenda that included action on two new ordinances.
Following a first reading of proposed Ordinance #722 regarding garbage collection rates, council members unanimously passedanemergencyincreaseto$30/monthresidential in city limits, $37/month residential outside city, and $65 per container commercial, effective the day after enactment. City secretrary Ashley Carothers assured council members that this increase will fix the budget deficit triggered by recent contractor rates. Mayor Pro Tem Glenda White summed up the group’s thinking: “If we don’t do it, we won’t be able to provide the service at all.”
Action to amend the city’s ordinance regarding Hotel/ Motel Tax was even swifter, with the only change involving switching the tax filing period to match city’s reporting period.
In addition, council amended Resolution #680 regarding the SpurVolunteer Fire Deparmtnet Discounted City Services Allotment Program to adopt a discounted flat rate for active and retired firefighters, on periodic terms that will sync with the city’s FundView billing.
