Spur dominates in Battle of the Bulldogs

The Spur Bulldogs faced the Anton Bulldogs on the road this week. Spur came out on top early in the 4th quarter, putting the mercy rule into place. The final score was 78–27, making the Bulldogs’ record 3–2 in the 2022 preseason.

The Bulldogs came out strong in the first quarter. Spur lost the toss but got the onside kick, making it Spur’s ball. Spur was fired up and ready, with nine minutes and thirty-nine seconds on the clock, and #22 Cory Hamilton scored the first touchdown of the game with a run of 23 yards. #25 Kayden Martinez's kick was good, making the score 8–0.

Spur’s defense dominated the quarter by holding the Anton Bulldogs on downs. One more touchdown was scored by Hamilton, and a PAT by Martinez to end the score for the first quarter at 16–0.

The second quarter was where all the action took place. Although Anton would score first, the Spur Bulldogs responded. Hamilton completed a 31-yard pass to #15 Jaxen Zarate, resulting in a touchdown. Martinez’ kick was good. The Spur Bulldogs defense stood strong, holding the Anton Bulldogs on downs. When Spur got the ball back Hamilton would score again with a run of 58 yards, and Martinez’s kick was good, bringing the score to 32-6.

The Spur Bulldog team worked together as the battle of the Bulldogs continued. #28 Ryan Davis would score for Spur on a 1-yard drive, and Martinez would nail the kick once again. With forty-seven seconds left in the first half, #6 Ace Walker picked off an Anton pass and ran it back for a Spur Bulldog touchdown, and Martinez again made the kick.

The Anton Bulldogs were not backing down. With time running out in the first half, Anton completed a pass for a touchdown, leaving the score at the half at 48–12.

Anton received the ball to start the third quarter. Their possession was short-lived. For Spur, Davis intercepted the ball and ran it back for a Spur touchdown. Martinez made the kick to bring the score to 54–16.

The Anton Bulldogs were not ready to go back to their doghouse quite yet, however. They would put thirteen points on the board before the Spur Bulldogs could score. Ending the quarter, Hamilton ran for a 25-yard touchdown, and Martinez’ kick was good, putting the score at 64–27.

The final quarter was quick. Spur ended the game with two more Hamilton touchdowns with a total of 69 yards. Martinez helped the Dogs by putting two more points on the board. The final score was 78–27.

The Spur Bulldogs will travel to Jayton Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
