Spur Elementary 3rd,
4th, and 5th graders and their teachers attended a day of the National Bison Week Celebration at Lubbock Lake Landmark on Wednesday, November 2, 2022.
Students learned about the natural heritage of the Southern High Plains, participated in several activities, and listened to Native American storyteller Blue Corn (Eldrena Douma) as she told of indigenous peoples’ relationship with Mother Earth and with the bison.
The activities included a Matisse-style paper tearing to create a bison design on paper; a “vocabulary scavenger hunt” in the museum; taking part in a survey in which they tossed a hulahoop out onto the landscape and then recorded the types of plants growing in that circular space; and watching a museum docent present a program on bison and its many uses to Native Americans. After the informative field trip, the students visited the Buddy Holly Memorial and West Texas Walk of Fame. Next they were treated to a great meal at Triple J Chophouse. All of this was made possible through a Minigrant for Teachers from the Community Foundation of West Texas.
