Ranked as high as number three in some state polls, White Deer proved a formidable foe for the Spur Bulldogs Saturday night at the Jayton Gridiron Classic, as the Bucks prevailed 72-28.
Spur jumped out to an early lead of 14-0 with 5:15 left in the first quarter. But before the quarter was finished White Deer had scored a rushing down, converted a recovered onside kick into a TD and scored yet another touchdown on the ground.
At the end of the first quarter, the scoreboard said White Deer 20, Spur 14.
Penalties and aggressive defensive play by the Bucks dug the hole deeper for the Bulldogs in the second quarter. With 5:27 left in the second quarter, the score was White Deer 34, Spur 22.
Turnovers, along with penalties and an aggressive White Deer defense continued to make the rest of the half challenging for the Bulldogs.
At halftime the score was White Deer 50, Spur 28.
The second half opened with a promising start for the Bulldogs as they forced White Deer to turn over the ball on downs, deep in Bulldog territory at the 12-yard line.
The third quarter was a defensive battle, with neither team getting into the end zone. At end of third quarter the score was still White Deer 50, Spur 28.
But in the fourth quarter White Deer converted a pass interception into a touchdown, and the score was White Deer 58, Spur 28 with 9:20 left in the game.
Two minutes later the Bucks recovered a Bulldog fumble, and in a couple of plays they took it in for a touchdown and the extra point was good, making the score White Deer 66, Spur 28 with 7:15 left in fourth quarter.
White Deer then kicked an onside kick, and it was picked up by the Bulldogs, who were taken down at the 25-yard line. As they were driving toward the end zone, quarterback Francisco Hernandez passed the ball to Dominic Garcia for a completed pass, and he was brought down by a White Deer defender.
In the process Garcia was injured in play. He suffered a fractured femur in Saturday’s game. He had surgery and was released from Lubbock’s University Medical Center on Monday.
White Deer scored a rushing TD on its final possession in the game and brought the score to White Deer 72, Spur 28.
The Bulldogs had one last shot but were not able to convert into anymore scoring.
