Spur forfeits in Wellman Oct. 6

The Spur Bulldogs played Wellman-Union last Friday, Oct. 6, in Wellman.

Both teams executed great defensive and offensive games, leaving the score evened up at 6–6 at the end of the first quarter. JD Hamilton returned a 47-yard kickoff to put the points on the board. The Bulldogs defense was strong, holding Wellman several times on fourth down and resulting in the Bulldogs getting the ball back for offense. Wellman’s defense responded, leading the teams into the second quarter.

Wellman would score first in the second quarter, but Spur responded with Margarito Pesina’s 44-yard run for a touchdown. The extra point was not good, leaving the score at 14–12. The Bulldogs’ defense continued to battle, but Wellman scored, making the tally 21–12.

Some Bulldogs stats: JD Hamilton led team tackles with eight, and Margarito Pesina trailed with seven. Ace Walker led the team with offensive passing for 7 yards. Margarito Pesina led rushing yards with runs totaling 79 yards.

The game ended at the half with a forfeit by Spur. According to Spur ISD Superintendent Craig Hamilton, the game was forfeited because five players were left on the field, and the school did not want to take a chance on any of the remaining players being injured with district play starting next week.

The Bulldogs face Valley October 20 to start district play on the road.
