Spur Independent School District appealed the referee’s decision to eject three Spur players from the Oct. 6 Spur at Wellman-Union football game. According to Spur ISD superintendent Craig Hamilton, the school requested a reversal of the ruling from the Texas Association of Sports Officials (TASO) and the University Interscholastic League.
In the October 6 game, Hamilton said, three players from Spur and three players from Wellman-Union were ejected after a scuffle from a tackle. The officials’ decision resulted in leaving only five Spur players on the field, and Hamilton previously told The Texas Spur that fewer players created an unsafe situation and left the remaining players possibly vulnerable to injuries, so the school opted to forfeit the game.
After the incident and its outcome, Spur school officials reviewed the video and felt that the official’s decision was excessive with regard to the Spur players’ conduct, and appealed to TASO and UIL on the players’ behalf. This week, Hamilton said, TASO and UIL reinstated one of the three players.
When a student is ejected from a game, Hamilton explained, part of the disciplinary action is that they also have to sit out the first half of the next game. On October 13, Spur had an open week, but this Friday they will play at Valley, and two players will have to sit out the first half of that game.
Regardless of the reinstatement ruling, the forfeiture remains. When a school forfeits, it is comparable to a loss for that game, and will not change.
