Spur library continues to make school supplies available

LIBRARY NOTES

The Friends of the Library received a very generous donation of school supplies from the employees at Galaxy Digital. A box was sent by the employees of our county’s blockchain facility filled with pens, pencils, paper, notebooks and more. It was delivered to the library by Galaxy employee and Spur resident Kate Harris.

We appreciate everyone who has donated to this great cause. The parents and grandparents who have picked up their supplies have thanked us, and many have stated they didn’t know if they could have been able to furnish their children’s school supplies without our help. One little boy starting kindergarten this year was so excited to receive his school supplies that he was literally jumping up and down and clapping his hands. When he saw his backpack he said, “I love it!” He then ran to me and said thank you as he gave me a huge hug. To those of you who donated supplies, funding or help getting and putting supplies together, this is makes it all worthwhile.

We still have plenty of supplies left, so please don’t hesitate to come by the library if your child needs them. Teachers from Spur ISD and Patton Springs ISD, you are welcome to come by the library and see if we have something you need for the classroom.

Mr. Molina and Mrs. Been from Spur Elementary graciously allowed the library to sit at their table during the school’s open house last week. We wanted to inform the parents of the advantages of being a Dickens County–Spur Public Library cardholder.

There are many resources available to our patrons, such as the Tex-Share Database. TexShare is a members-only website that offers access to over 60 databases. Dickens County-Spur Public Library cardholders can access specialty databases such as ERIC (Education Resource Information Center), which is sponsored by the US Department of Education, and Explora for Elementary/ Primary Schools, which pulls together content from various resources and offers a searching/browsing interface suitable for younger students (Explora also offers a database for middle school and high school students).

These are just a couple of the many resources offered to students for research. The library signed up 25 new cardholders that evening. If you are interested in checking out TexShare Database or any of the other perks you get by being a Dickens County–Spur Public Library cardholder, please call me at the library and I will be glad to help you get started.

Our community recently lost a dear friend with the passing of Jody Fry. She always brought a smile and sometimes a chuckle when she entered a room. Our condolences go out to her family. A donation in her memory was received by the Friends of the Library and is greatly appreciated.

We have added a few more books to our shelves thanks to the funding received from the Tocker Foundation. One of the titles in the newly added books is “Robert B. Parker’s Bad Influence” by Alyson Gaylin. Boston PI Sunny Randall investigates the dark side of social media in this exciting new thriller in the bestselling series. Randall’s newest client, Blake, seems to have it all: he is an Instagram influencer, with all the perks the lifestyle entails—a beautiful girlfriend, wealth, and adoring fans. But one of those fans has turned ugly, and Sunny is brought on board by Blake’s manager, Bethany, to protect him and to uncover who is out to kill him. In doing so, she investigates a glamorous world rife with lies and schemes…and ties to a dangerous criminal scene. When Bethany goes missing and the threats against Blake escalate, Sunny realizes that in order to solve this case, she has to find out exactly who Blake and Bethany are, behind the Instagram filters. While digging into their pasts, she is also forced to confront her own, as old friends—and ex-husbands—reappear. With a combination of oldschool crime-solving skills and modern internet savvy, Sunny will stop at nothing to catch a killer.

Check it all out at the library.
