Engaging young hearts and minds in respect for police work is an important part of any department’s public relations— and in Spur this spring, the force has gained a very popular ally.
K9 Dodger, who was sworn in March 10 as a drug detection dog, has earned his kibble not only in fighting crime but in Facebook storytime, on the cover of a safety-themed coloring book, on regional television and now as the model for a portrait contest.
Spur PD officers welcome artists of all ages to draw, paint or color a picture of K9 Dodger and have provided mug shots as a starting point. Winners will be decided by popular vote via Facebook likes.
The contest has already gained a number of submissions from near and far.
The first, according to an April 29 post by the squad, was from six-year-old Pablo of Spur.
Here are the rules.
• The deadline for submission is Wednesday, May 20, 2020.
• While the portrait does not have to be from the coloring books the department is distributing, it does have to on a “regular size sheet of paper” in order to be scanned and posted to Facebook.
• Three different age groups are eligible to participate: Ages 1–10; Ages 11–17, and Ages 18 and up.
• Don’t forget to put your name, age and contact information on the back of the picture.
• Submissions may be dropped off at the Police Department or Spur City Hall at Harris St. and Burlington Ave. For those who can’t go out, message the Spur PD page and an officer will pick up your submission.
• For those not local to Spur, you can scan it or mail it to the Spur PD at 402 Burlington Ave., Spur, TX 79370.
• Winners will receive a printed and framed photograph taken with K9 Dodger. (If the winner is not from Spur the winner will have to come to Spur to take the picture with Dodger.)
