At a June 2 planning session with staff of KCBD-TV (Channel 11), local business owners, and key representatives from Spur and Dickens County at the Spur museum, Spur participants chose the Jones Stadium football field in Swenson Park as their preferred location for the showcase to be held Tuesday, July 26, 2022.
The city was spotlighted for the first time on KCBD’s long-running summer Live Community Coverage tour in August 2017, when fund-raising for a swimming pool renovation project was the city’s focus. At that time the event was also held at Jones Stadium in Swenson Park.
This time around, there was discussion among city leaders and business owners about options of having the event at the same place, or focusing on the downtown area, where there are many great things going on.
Kase Wilbanks, reporter and anchor for KCBD, assured the downtown merchants and supporters that even if the event is not held downtown that downtown would be represented in videos and storylines. Representatives from KCBD will be coming to Spur to film stories and take videos of the area prior to the night of the broadcast. Wilbanks said he was ready to begin right then, because he’d brought his camera with him.
Spur police chief Billy Spears said from a law enforcement perspective the football field would be a better choice.
An informal raising of hands signaled the choice among those present, with the majority opting for Jones Stadium. The decision was ultimately left to the technical crews of KCBD, who said they would conduct the main portion of the event at the football field, while meteorologist John Robinson would broadcast the weather from a downtown location to be determined.
