With temperatures already climbing into the mid-90s in Spur last week, minds quite naturally turn to thoughts of an inviting splash into cool water, or a relaxing stretch in the sun at the pool.
The Texas Spur reached out to community donor Galaxy Digital—the corporate patron that’s pledged to pick up where Argo Blockchain left off in rebuilding the City of Spur’s historic swimming pool— for an update.
Galaxy spokesperson Mike Wursthorn, who’s based in the New York City office but who’s personally familiar with where things left off, said that upon taking over Helios and its community obligations, Galaxy began the process of assessing and restarting work on the pool. “We’ve completed the initial design stage,” said Wursthorn, “and are currently in the blueprint phase of the project.”
When Galaxy acquired Argo’s Helios plant in northern Dickens County the last week of 2022, work on the Spur pool had been halted for some months. The initial design of the overall pool and deck had already been revised to align with community wishes. Mounds of dirt had been piled around the perimeter to fill in following plumbing repairs. Concrete forms that had been constructed to create a smaller footprint inside the 1930s pool had deteriorated out in the elements.
Wursthorn acknowledged the setbacks his firm inherited. “Much of the previous work had to be restarted due to damage to existing structures that had been built on the site and the closure of the previous contractor. Galaxy took this time to review the original design that had been completed by Argo, ensuring the construction of a highquality pool for Spur that lasts for years to come. The major design elements of the pool largely remain the same.”
Working in tandem with local officials to address the needs of the community, its residents, and Galaxy employees, Wursthorn said, his team was in the process of selecting a new contractor.
As for the likelihood that kids will be doing cannonballs in Swenson Park before the start of the next school term, Wursthorn wasn’t quite ready to take the plunge.
“Once we’ve completed that step and worked out a timeline, we’ll share more details on when the pool will be ready,” he said.
