The City of Spur has met three times in recent weeks, with the news coming in an April 23 called meeting that city secretary Ashley Carothers, who has been employed at city hall for six and a half years in two different capacities, will be leaving due to family and personal reasons. The city issued a note of thanks to Carothers on social media and has begun the search for a successor.
At its April 18 regular session, Mayor Pro Tem Glenda White reported on renovation progress at the Swenson Park pool bathhouse, which she said is almost complete. Several toilets are still not functioning properly, White said, and she suggested that the expense of replacing them be covered by the city’s pool fund. She also recommended that a regular water heater be installed in place of the current, ineffective tankless units. White praised the solution of installing plexiglass over window vents to keep out windblown dirt.
Mayor Louise Jones also took the opportunity to thank outgoing council member Fronye Morris for her seven years on the Spur city council, including serving as liaison for the police department.
On the agenda items, the council denied a temporary travel trailer variance request for Matthew Gooch at 304 S. 2nd St. Council also denied a request from Dwayne Hagar for a travel trailer variance at 520 Calvert Ave. Another request, from Ramon Tavarez for a temporary RV variance at 215 Keeler, was also denied.
Regarding the request for a variance for a mobile home to be permanently located at 221 Carroll Avenue, council voted to table the matter until a canvass of neigbhors could be completed.
Police chief Billy R. Spears reported 54 calls fo service during March and one warrant arrest. Fire chief Wess Abbott submitted a report noting responses to 1 structure fire, 1 vehicle fire, 1 other fire, and 5 grass fires, and noting that City of Spur emergency sirens would be tested again soon.
City works supervisor Chris Cornett reported that several picnic tables donated by the Spur school had been refurbished and set out in city parks. City crews have been spraying weeds, patching potholes, working to haul off recently demolished houses, and repairing fences and cages at the animal shelter.
Codes supervisor Barry Ferguson said he had been working on Ordinance 643 violations and Ordinance 610 cases regarding substandard buildings, as well as approving a vent hood installation at the Mix’d Café in progress and renovations at the Dollar General store. He also reported codes violations and assigned new addresses.
For municipal court, Ashley Carhothers noted 7 violation letters sent out and $930 in fines collected. The municipal judge will be back in the office May 17.
The next city holiday will be Monday, May 29, Memorial Day, and the next regular city council meeeting will be Tuesday, May 15, Carothers reported.
Present were Mayor Louise Jones, Mayor Pro Tem Glenda White, and council members Rhea Melton, Hope Ortiz, Laidy Vasquez and Don Wright. Fronye Morris was absent.
