Spur spiffs up for hometown and visitors

In case you haven’t

driven around town lately— or stepped inside local businesses—there’s a lot of fixin’ up going on. At Spur Security Bank recently, for instance, new seal coating was done in the parking lot, according to CEO Kevin Bass, and shrubbery that had overgrown its attractiveness was removed from beside the drive-through.

Around the corner on Willard Avenue, in what previous owner John Schmidt described as the oldest residence still standing in Spur, the two-story historic home was getting a new metal roof a couple of weeks ago. On E. 2nd Street, several tax-sale properties— including the home on the corner of Sterley, also renovated with a new roof—have gotten bright new coats of paint lately.

All along Burlington Avenue, the city’s main commercial corridor, shop owners have been taking steps to freshen up inside and out. Starting in the 700 block (closest to Hill Street), the Lucky Spur boutique painted its exterior a soothing sage green. They were among the retailers open last Thursday during Late Night Shopping, along with the new Mercantile at Spur Hardware and numerous other stores.

At the Spur Senior Center in the 200 block, improvements have continued inside as well as out. A new mural depicting Soldiers Mound by Vicki Glass Diggs now graces the dining room’s south wall, and a rearrangement of the dining and parlor spaces makes the center more inviting to patrons of all ages.

Each of these projects has also provided work for numerous local contractors.
