The Spur fifth graders presented the school’s annual Veterans Day program, Wednesday, Nov. 11, in the Dog Dome Auditorium. All grades/classes, several parents, some visitors, and a few veterans attended.
Between two short puppet shows, the students told about the history of Veterans Day and presented information about two Latinx Texan heroes who were veterans of World War II.
As the students learned, Cleto L. Rodriquez received the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the taking of Manila in the Philippines. Dr. Hector P. Garcia, who immigrated to Texas as a child, served in the war. Upon his return, he organized the American G.I. Forum to help Latinx veterans who were not being treated the same as white veterans. The A.G.I.F. demanded health and education benefits for Latinx veterans. Dr. Garcia received the U.S. Medal of Freedom for his civil rights works.
A reception for veterans and the fifth graders was hosted by Leslee Hindman’s Culinary Arts 1 class.
