Spur theater puts on the polish for ‘Performances at the Palace’

Tumbleweed Smith, DeAnne Roberts, Lucy Dean Record kick off season May 14

SPUR, TEXAS—In preparation for the launch of its 2022 “Performances at the Palace,” Spur’s Palace Theater continues to make improvements to its 1929 building and equipment.

When an original 54-by-52-inch plate glass window cracked following a storm several weeks ago, the theater’s caretakers didn’t miss a beat. The window has been temporarily replaced by plywood, which will serve as a bulletin board for guests at the May 14 season kickoff event. Although the glass company in Lubbock is backed up for three months with orders, said Dickens County Historical Commission chair Harry Bob Martin, he and his wife, Mary, who have been involved in every stage of the theater’s restoration, painted the board white to match the fresh trim that was done this week. Lance Logsdon of Dickens painted the awning, windows, and door.

Upgraded sound equipment will provide an enhanced audience experience as well. Donor plaques honor gifts that came in during pandemic and winter-weather closures have been installed. Preparations are also in the works for a Spurville Folk Jam, with an organizational meeting of interested vocalists and instrumentalists slated for Thursday night, May 19, at 6 p.m. And a new website will launch this week at www.PalaceSpur.org.

Tickets are still available for the May 14 program featuring “Sound of Texas” radio host Tumbleweed Smith. The event gets under way at 7 p.m. that Saturday evneing, with vocalist DeAnne Roberts of Dickens and pianist Lucy Dean Record of Lockney opening with a selection of musical numbers.

Tumbleweed Smith’s program “Outrageous Texas Women of Character” features segments from his decades of radio interviews with interesting personalities— with plenty of laughs and admiration to go around. He’ll also interview Roberts and Record as part of the live show.

The $20 ticket for two includes a free wine tasting next door at The Texas Spur building for those 21 and over, starting at 6 p.m., with a sampling presented by the new Winery at 271 of Post, Texas. A coffee selection will also be available.

Tickets are $20 for two admissions: the Palace encourages guests to bring an extraordinary Texas woman — wife, mother, daughter, neighbor, sister, friend — and pin up a photo and card on our lobby board in her honor. (Hint: a ticket for two will make a great Mothers Day gift!)
