InSpur’sHomecoming varsity football game at Jones Stadium September 22, the Spur Bulldogs took the win against Anton’s Bulldogs with a final score of 58–41.
There is nothing like a Spur Homecoming football game. Graduates of Spur schools gathered in the stadium, with players fired up and ready to show Bulldog Pride for the ex-students. The array of blue and gold cheered on their alma mater team to a victory.
Anton won the toss but declined, receiving in the first half. Anton’s Dogs began with an onside kick to Ace Walker, forcing a fumble that they recovered. This did not keep the Spur Bulldogs down. They responded after Anton scored first, for a Spur touchdown by a forty-yard run by Margarito Pesina to tie the score 6–6.
The Spur Bulldogs defense was on point. Walker would intercept the ball and return it for a twentyfour- yard run to score. Pesina kicked the extra point, making the score 13–6. Spur’s defense was still working, holding the Anton Bulldogs on downs. Spur worked their way down the field to score another touchdown by Pesina. The kick attempt was no good, ending the first quarter with the score of 19–6 Spur.
The Anton Bulldogs came back in the second quarter by scoring twice to tie up the score 19–19. Spur kicked into gear after Walker had a kickoff return of seventy- eight yards and Pesina kicked the extra point to put Spur on top 26–19.
The Spur Bulldogs’ defense continued to work, but Anton scored, bringing the score to 26–25. Once again, Walker return the kickoff for another seventyeight- yard run, with the extra point attempt no good. The first half wrapped up with the Spur Bulldogs ahead 32–25.
Spur’s band performed a sentimental accompaniment of “Love Me Tender” as the 2023 Homecoming Court, parents, and little ones with gift presentations enjoyed their moment in the spotlight. The band performed rousing renditions of the Spur fight song and almamateratvariouspoints in the evening as well.
The last two quarters was a battle for sure, but the Spur Bulldogs came out on top. Walker scored twice with a total of fifty-one yards, and Pesina scored once with a six-yard touchdown. Pesina attempted three extra-point kicks, making all three. The Bulldog defense shone through with JD Hamilton’s total of nineteen tackles and Walker’s fifteen. The Spur Bulldogs ended the game with the score 53–41 for a huge Homecoming Wwin.
“I thought we finally had a second half push that we haven’t had at the start the season,” said Head Coach Tate Clark. “It always nice to get a win on the board. I thought the kids did a good job adjusting and working as a team to get the win.”
Spur faces Jayton at home next week, September 29, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
