With a 26-8 record and a bi-district gold ball under their belts, the Spur girls basketball team fought hard to win the next gold ball at last Thursday's area game.
The air in the Post Antelopes gym, which hosted the matchup as a neutral site, was electrifying. And Spur fans turned out in huge fashion, taking up threequarters of the seats, to watch what the faithful hoped would be a major upset.
Sands, ranked #1, took the tipoff and ran for the first threepointer The Spurettes took it in stride and got the rebound. But the Lady Mustangs showed their ruthless way of playing by stealing the ball.
By the end of the first quarter the Spurettes were down 7–14. About every time Spur would get the ball Sands would unmercifully take it away and score. At the half, the score stood at Spur 20, Sands 30.
To the Spurettes’ credit they didn’t stoop down to the level of dirty play exhibited by the Lady Stangs. By the end of the half Sands had racked up eight fouls. Spur did score on the free throws and managed to stay within 10 points though the third quarter.
At the beginning of the fourth Spur pulled to within 8 points and the crowd really thought the Spurettes just might pull up to at least tie. But the Sands girls kept control of ball to manage the clock, then went on a runaway scoring spree.
When the buzzer sounded and the dust cleared Spur had fallen to the team from Ackerly 32–55, ending a strong season marked by many standout moments.
