The only blemish on the Spur Spurettes’ varsity girls district record is a loss to the Jayton Lady Jays on January 18 in Jayton. When the Lady Jays come calling Friday in Spur, the Spurettes are certain to want to offer them the same reception.
District 5-1A, in recent years, has not produced a lot of back-to-back district championships. In fact, a different team has won the district crown each year for the past four years.
In 2021 the Spurettes won the district title, but will have to defeat Jayton, to share a portion of the district crown as co-champions with the Lady Jays in 2022. If they emerge victorius, another game will be played to see who is first seed in the playoffs. If the Spurettes lose, in all likelihood, the Lady Jays will be the 2022 district champs.
The Lady Jays, 7–0 in district and 21–6 for the year, are on a nine-game winning streak and are ranked #11 in the state.
Spur is 6–1 in district and 21–7 for the year, is on a threegame winning streak and is ranked #20 in the state.
Spur and Jayton are mathematically set to be in the playoffs even if seeding is still to be determined via Friday night’s shootout, as both hold much better records than the other four teams in their district.
Three teams get a ticket to the playoffs, and the picture gets little fuzzy when it comes to who will get the third seed. At press time, Guthrie was in third place with a 3–4 record. However, they have to face Jayton again on Monday. Also in contention for the third ticket are the Patton Springs Lady Rangers, who are 2–5, and the Paducah Lady Dragons, who are 2–5. Guthrie and Paducah both still have three games in district play. If Guthrie and Paducah were to lose all of their games, and Patton Springs were to win the rest of theirs, the Lady Rangers could be going to the playoffs. The scenarios of who could get the third ticket are too numerous to mention.
The only team totally out of contention at this point are the 1–7 Motley County Lady Matadors.
