Basketball playoff weeks are chock-full of breaking news milestones that occur off-cycle for weekly newspapers. Consider what has happened in the world of 15-1A girls’ basketball since The Texas Spur went to press at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2020.
Spur Spurettes 63, Vernon Northside 23. The Spur Spurettes defeated Vernon Northside 63-23 the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 18, in Stamford to win a bi-district championship. That victory qualified them to play the undefeated-in-district 14-1A champions Aspermont Lady Hornets in Post the evening of Friday, Feb. 21.
Spur Spurettes 42, Aspermont 43. The Spurettes punched above their weight and never let the Lady Hornets put the game away. At halftime, the score was tied at 21-21, and the Spurettes had a couple of runs that looked like they might keep the lead. But cold shooting on free throws did them no favors, and Aspermont squeaked out a victory to end Spur’s season. Aspermont was awarded the area championship and takes on Roscoe’s Highland for the regional quarterfinals Tuesday evening at McMurry University in Abilene.
Motley County Lady Matadors 55, Benjamin 50. The third-seed Lady Matadors prevailed to win a bi-district title versus Benjamin the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 18, earning a ticket to play Hermleigh the evening of Thursday, Feb. 20 in Slaton. The Hermleigh girls were the state champion runners-up for the past two years, and the Cardinals were a formidable opponent for the Lady Mats. The Lady Cardinals won the area title with a score of 55-19. Hermleigh was to face 15-1A champion Guthrie the evening of Monday, Feb. 24, at Lubbock Roosevelt.
Guthrie Lady Jaguars 36, Westbrook 32. After a bye week as district champs, the #25 Lady Jags headed to Post the evening of Friday, Feb. 21, to take on the Westbrook Lady Cats. Guthrie was thrown off their rhythm with a couple of injuries early in the game and fell behind Westbrook in the first quarter, but coach Krissy Shipman took advantage of time-outs and substitutions to get the district champs settled down and back in the lead. Westbrook, a bi-district champion last year, was not going to go without a fight, and kept it close most of the game. Guthrie won the area championship, a notable achievement for a team whose last playoff appearance was seven years ago.
Guthrie earned a ticket to play Hermleigh, the state championship runner-up for the past two years, at Lubbock Roosevelt the evening of Monday, Feb. 24.
