Last week, during some of the most unpleasant chill and cold the region has seen in some time, Collier Construction crews were undaunted in their daily progress on the Spur fire station at Third and Burlington.
After working in sub-freezing temps the previous week to remove and stack blankets used on the concrete pad during the curing process, workers began erecting steel support beams and rafters just as rain set in.
According to site supervisor Mike Newton, all of the steel members were precut, drilled, welded and marked in Collier’s Lubbock shops, then delivered by truck to the job site.The vertical framing was set into place, then, using a pair of hydraulic lifts, workers attached beams and rafters with bolts.
