Surya Kidd Cannon, daughter of Chuck Cannon (Spur High School Class of '84) and Chai-Shian Kua of Lisle, Illinois, granddaughter of Harvey and Ineta Cannon of Spur and Mr. and Mrs. Sin-Kwi Kua of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, graduated from the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy on June 1, 2019.
She will be enrolling at Duke University in August 2019, and plans to major in computer science.
Surya was a National Merit Scholar finalist, Illinois State Scholar, student council vice president, alumni head of the Student Committee for IMSA Advancement, and Heliotrope Arts Club co-president. In 2018-19, she assisted with research at the University of Illinois, Chicago with Dr. Barbara Di Eugenio in the Natural Language Processing Lab. In 2017, Surya was accelerando principal cellist at the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra.
