Teams announced for Jayton Gridiron Classic Aug. 26-28

The 18th Annual Gridiron Classic has released the teams selected for its annual showcase of Six Man Football set for August 26–28 at Jaybird Stadium in Jayton.

Up first is the Valley Patriots versus the Ira Bulldogs on Thursday, Aug. 26 at 6 p.m.

Local fans may remember that Valley is coached by John Stanaland, brother of Jayton football coach Josh Stanaland.

Ira, 11 miles south of Snyder, is no stranger to this area. They return nearly every player from their 2020 season, including running back Cody McGowen and defensive end Shayden Hatley, who both made All-State as juniors.

The hometown Jayton Jaybirds take the field Thursday at 8 p.m. versus the Knox City Greyhounds.

On Friday night the Borden County Coyotes face the May Tigers at 6 p.m. This will be one powerful matchup; in 2020 Borden County was an 11-3 state semifinalist and May was a 13-2 state finalist.

If you’ve streamed the CBS All Access/Paramount Plus TV show “Texas Six,” you know it documented the football season of the Strawn Greyhounds, including their 2019 visit to Jayton’s Gridiron Classic.

In 2021 Strawn is back. A premier D II school in Texas six-man football, they were 11-2 last year and a state semifinalist. Strawn faces the White Deer Bucks, a D-I team and bi-district finalist last year. On the final evening of play

On the final evening of play the Aspermont Hornets, right next door to Jayton, take on the Follett Panthers at 6 p.m.. Follett was 12-1 last year and a regional finalist.

The last game of the classic will be the Gordon Longhorns versus the O’Donnell Screamin’ Eagles at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Gordon, eight miles from Strawn, are in the same district, so they know a thing or two about D-II rivalries. Last year the Longhorns were an 8-4 area finalist.

Regarding D-I rivalries, O’Donnell and Borden County are in the same district. O’Donnell was an 8-3 bi-district finalist last year.
