The Texas Historical Commission (THC, the nationally recognized state agency charged with preserving Texas history through its architectural, archeological and cultural landmarks, has opened numerous channels for individuals and groups to take part in its upcoming planning process.
“Your voice matters!” reads the online engagement platform for Our Resilient Heritage, the THC’s 2022-2032 Texas Statewide Historic Preservation Plan.
Citizens are invited to follow the planning process and learn how they can participate in virtual and in-person public meetings. They can also use this website to share stories related to Texas history, offer ideas to improve preservation efforts, and map the historic places they consider important.
County historical commissions are among the groups who have been invited to take part in public workshops associated with the statewide plan.
An On-Site Regional Workshop is scheduled for January 13, 2022, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Elks Art Center in Abilene. This workshop is free and open to the public. For more information or to register, please visit www.texaspreservationplan.com and navigate to the “Meetings” tab.

For the first phase of planning, the THC is soliciting help to explore answers to the following questions:
• What are the most pressing issues facing our efforts to save Texas history and historic places?
• How does historic preservation help nurture vibrant and diverse communities?
• In what ways can we illustrate how historic preservation contributes to the livelihood of Texans?
• How can preservationists resiliently face constant economic, social and environmental change?
• In what ways are these issues made more challenging by the impacts of our recent health crisis?
