Among West Texas newspapers in a dozen competition categories last week in Decatur, The Texas Spur took home three awards in the West Texas Press Association’s annual Better Newspapers Contest. The contest covered content published in calendar year 2018. Competing in Division D, small-circulation weeklies, The Texas Spur received second place in the Editorial Writing category, for pieces written by Kay Ellington and Michelle Newby Lancaster. The Texas Spur also won third place in the Special Section category for its 2018-19 Community Guide. In the Special Coverage category, The Texas Spur earned an honorable mention for its role in covering the need for the reestablishment of a local chamber of commerce. The WTPA’s contest includes a range of categories in news, feature and editorial writing, photography, advertising, and general excellence, with awards given to four divisions in each. The WPTA, which identifies itself as “the world’s largest regional press association,” embraces dailies, semiweeklies, and weeklies in Texas from I-35 to the New Mexico border. Awards were presented during the organization’s three-day annual convention held July 19-21 in Decatur. Complete results for the categories in which The Texas Spur won are:
