WTC to host self-defense class for women May 15 & 22
SNYDER—Western Texas College (WTC) will host a two-day women’s self-defense class May 15 and 22.
The class if being taught by certified defensive tactics instructor Dustin LaFon, who said that he has been practicing and teaching self-defense techniques for many years. He has spent time as a professional kickboxer, defensive tactics coordinator in gang intelligence and police officer.
LaFon said, “Graduation is coming up and girls are going away to college and are going to be by themselves for the first time. The class is like a fire extinguisher—it’s one of those things where you have it and learn how to use it and hope you never have to,” he said.
The class will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 15 and 22 at WTC’s College on the Square. The cost is $125 and lunch will be provided for both class days. Pre-registration is required and can be completed by calling the College on the Square at (325) 574-6581.

Mark Marley’s Go Big or Go Home BBQ Bash in Plainview, May 14–16
PLAINVIEW—The 8th annual Mark Marley’s Go Big or Go Home BBQ Bash will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May 14 through 16, 2021 at the Running Water Draw (Kidsville) Park in Plainview.
The three-day event will include a state-sanctioned barbecue cook-off, concerts featuring Micky and the Motorcars and Cooder Graw, and many other activities. The Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) state-sanctioned barbecue cook-off will begin on Friday night and includes a KCBS Steak Cook-off, Cooks Choice; a dessert contest; and a Margarita Mix-off. Entry fee for the steak cook-off is $75, and all other entry fees are $25.
Saturday will begin with a Kids’ Q—a cook-off for youngsters. Kids in two age categories will cook steaks: ages 6 through 11 and ages 12 through 17. Entry fee is $25.
New this year is the Celebrate Real Pork Series Kids’ Q in conjunction with KCBS and the National Pork Board. Young chefs will have an opportunity to cook pork chops and win additional prizes. The event will feature a Saturday and Sunday KCBS Cook-off. Both events include four meat categories (pork ribs, chicken, pork and brisket) and will offer cash prizes totaling $6,500 for each contest.
Entry fees are $225 for the first cook-off and $200 for the second; KCBS association is not required. The Grand Champion for each cook-off qualifies for the American Royal Invitational and a chance at the Jack Daniels Invitational, as well as points from the competition apply to KCBS team point scores and Texas BBQ Society scores. The contest will also include a Celebrate Real Pork Chop Series ancillary competition. Prizes are sponsored by the National Pork Board, and there is no entry fee for this event.
Participants who don’t want to compete in the cook-off are encouraged to enter the Backyard Brawl, a competition for master weekend grillers who enjoy cooking but don’t wish to chase points. Horizon School of the Arts to present ‘Godspell’ May 22 & 23 at Ragtown Gospel Theater in Post
POST—Godspell is a powerful, high energy rock, gospel, and pop music and dance presentation based on the Gospel of Matthew.
Since the Tony-award winning musical premiered on Broadway in 1971, this joyful and humor-filled contemporary telling of the story of Jesus has been seen by tens of millions of people.
Celebrating Godspell’s fiftieth year of entertaining and inspiring audiences from Broadway all the way around the world and back, theater companies worldwide are presenting this international hit for all ages. Ragtown Gospel Theater will be hosting the Horizon School of the Arts presentation of Godspell.
Lubbock’s Horizon School of the Arts is home to a troupe of extraordinarily gifted young actors, singers, and dancers.

Roaring Springs Memorial Day program set for May 31
ROARING SPRINGS—The Roaring Springs Memorial Day program is being planned. The program will be May 31, 2021 at the Frank Mitchell Park in Roaring Springs starting at 10:30 a.m.
The guest speaker this year will be Jeremy Jones, son of Jon Jones and Jim and Carla Meador descendant of Frank Mitchell.
After the program the Taco Q restaurant will be selling hamburgers, and veterans eat free.
