The Caprock Courier, the weekly newspaper serving the region of Briscoe, Hall and Motley counties, is under new ownership beginning with its March 26 issue.
Paragraph Ranch LLC, a media company based in Spur, purchased the publication, which absorbed the earlier Briscoe County News and the Motley County Tribune in 2016 under the editorship of Tori Minick.
“We are pleased and honored to continue the tradition of community coverage in West Texas with the Caprock Courier,” said Kay Ellington, CEO of Paragraph Ranch LLC and publisher of the Texas Spur. “The acquisition of The Texas Spur should enable us to bring the whole region together. For example, the high school teams in the 15-1A basketball district are located in either a Texas Spur town or a Caprock Courier town. So communities like Motley County, Paducah, Guthrie, Jayton and Spur should get consistent, regular coverage from their weekly newspapers.”
Ellington, who brings four decades of experience with local newspapers and national media firms to the job, including the New York Times Group and Gannett Newspapers, has been publisher of The Texas Spur since 2018.
Barbara Brannon, who retired in 2019 as executive director of the Texas Plains Trail Region heritage tourism organization of the Texas Historical Commission and now serves as editor of the Texas Spur, will serve as associate publisher of the Caprock Courier.
Liz Adams, who earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from West Texas A&M University, was named managing editor. The Caprock Courier’s business and administration functions will be handled from the Spur office, while news will be covered locally in the paper’s market area.
