Thanks from the Spur library; farewell to board member Castellon

LIBRARY NOTES

The Friends of the Library would like to thank Laurie Robinson and Christy Marshall of Helping Hands of Dickens County for their generous donation. Thank you to all the people who shopped there during the month of May! The donation will go a long way in helping enhance our collections in both the adult and children’s section of the library.

We had a very large turnout for the Collaborative Summer Reading Program featuring Jon Shipp the beekeeper. Everyone seemed to enjoy the book “David of the Bees Gathers Honey” by Francie Farmer. The book is now available to checkout. Many of the children got their first library card and a few had a library card already. The reading contest will go through the last day of Summer Reading, which is June 28. The drawing for the three prizes in three categories will be held following the program with Kay Ellington and Barbara Brannon of the Texas Spur, “Your Newspaper and How It’s Made.”

The three categories are ages 0 through 5, ages 6 through 8, and ages 9 and above. For every ten books either read by the child or read to the child they will get a ticket in the drawing. They will also get to pick a prize from the treasure chest for every ten books read. If your child doesn’t have their reading log you can come by the library to pick one up.

Your youngster might want to check out one of the “Magic Mommy Stories” by Karin McCay, author and news anchor at KCBD-TV Channel 11 in Lubbock. McCay, along with Abner Euresti, have been co-anchoring together since 1980, making them the longest running co-anchors in the country.

We have two of McCay’s books available right now. They are “Marvin and the Giant Bubble” and “Marvin and the Surprise Package.” When McCay’s grandchildren moved from Lubbock to Germany, she began writing stories about a brother and sister, Marvin and Melissa Ann. “Marvin and the Surprise Package” is a funny view of sibling rivalry that weaves into a sweet lesson about sharing. “Marvin and the Giant Bubble” is a backyard adventure with a big reminder that you can’t fool Mommy…because mommies always know what kids are up to.

The community is sad to see Coach David Castellon move away. We wish him well in his endeavors. We at the library are especially sad to see Paige Castellon go. She has been on our board of trustees, and her presence will be missed. Good luck to you both. Before they left, Paige made a donation of several books from her collection.

Voted as one of the best books of the year by The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, NPR, The Washington Post, Tordotcom, Marie Claire, Vox, Mashable, Men’s Health, Library Journal, Book Riot, and LibraryReads is “Mexican Gothic” by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Adrian Long with an Amazon book review called it “An Amazon best book of July 2020” and had this to say about it: “The gothic novels of today are not like those of yesteryear: female protagonists are smart and proactive, and vaguely disquieting events become truly terrifying. Yet Silvia Moreno-Garcia (“Signal to Noise,” “Gods of Jade and Shadow”) cleverly doubles down on the gothic’s overwrought reputation by setting “Mexican Gothic” in the 1950s and putting a young socialite in the starring role. Unsettled by a strange letter, Noemí leaves cosmopolitan Mexico City to check on her newly married but naïve cousin, who now lives at a remote estate called High Place. Noemí—who smokes cigarettes, drives a convertible, and knows her mind—discovers that High Place lives in the past: mold runs across the wallpaper, the electricity barely works, and the servants don’t speak. Plus the ancient English-born master of the house has a thing for eugenics, and Noemí’s cousin is clearly losing her mind. And then Noemí herself begins to hear voices.… Put plenty of me-time on your calendar, because you won’t want to stop for breaks while you race through Moreno-Garcia’s creepy, glorious read that is pitch-perfect for today’s audience.”
