Ihope that you take some time to take a pause and enjoy the warmer and longer days. This corner is taking some time to give a few thumbs up to some good things going on around here, and to point with a downward digit some improvements warranted.
Thumbs up: Jayton Jaybirds. Congratulations to the Jayton Jaybirds boys varsity basketball team for making it all the way to the State Championship game this year, and congratulations to the fans for their infectious enthusiasm in rooting for their team.
Thumbs up: Fun fundraisers. Here’s a shout-out to the Spur Senior Citizens Center for their Valentine’s Day Karoake taco supper. Amid a dusty, wind-blown February their event gave locals an enjoyable escape for a good cause. Kudos to the Dickens-Spur Library for the chili dog/Frito pie supper. Bidding on their silent auction treasures online and offline created a bit of March merriment.
Thumbs up: City of Spur. Thank you to the City of Spur for putting together the Spring Clean-Up. The whole town will feel better with less clutter and trash in evidence as we drive around. Residents, there’s still time to get your debris to the roll-offs if you haven’t already!
Thumbs up: The Palace Theater.
The Palace Theater had a great event the first Saturday in March. During the Covid pandemic, Mike Robertson travelled to 250 movie theaters across Texas, and he gave a great talk, showed interesting photos, and had amusing tidbits about the experience. “The Show Must Go On” was a night of entertainment that could have just as easily occurred in Lubbock, Austin or Dallas.
Thumbs down: Not attending events.
It’s time for locals to do a better job, stepping up to attend events. Case in point: “The Show Must Go On” at the Palace Theater the first Saturday in March. Admission was free. A brand, new sound system purchased by fundraising had just been installed. The concession stand was open and the popcorn, candy and drinks were delicious and the weather outside was nice and warm. Attendance was less than it should have been. What is so alluring on your couch that you can’t spend a couple of hours supporting this treasure in your hometown? People say they love their hometown, but the way you show it is by showing up to support events, so that the town can continue to have the vital organizations and attractions.
But let’s all turn over a new leaf this spring. To show our support for The Palace Theater, we have included a survey in this issue. Tell us what kind of events you’d like to see at the Palace, send in the survey and we’ll send you two tickets to your event of choice to the Palace Theater.
