Tocker Foundation awards $5,000 grant to library

The Dickens County-Spur Public Library last week received a collection development grant from the Tocker Foundation in the amount of $5,000. The grant will be used to provide both adult and children's fiction and non-fiction books in regular and large print. It will also be used for DVDs and audiobooks.

The Tocker Foundation has adopted a goal of promoting Texas public libraries in communities of 12,000 or fewer population. All library grant applications are first reviewed by the Tocker Foundation's grant review committee. The committee includes a team of experienced librarians who are also successful grantees appointed by the Texas Library Association. They make recommendations to the Tocker Foundation board of directors, who make the final decisions.

The Tocker Foundation was established in 1964 to implement the philanthropic interest of Philip and Olive Tocker. After retiring, the couple actively pursued their avocations and endowed the foundation with their estates in 1994 and 1993. The foundation partners with community libraries to meet the particular needs of the community. Library director Donnice Carruth says the library staff and board are thrilled and extremely appreciative of receiving this grant from the Tocker Foundation. They welcome suggestions from the community as to what books, audiobooks, and DVDs they would like to obtain for checkout.
