Following Governor Greg Abbott’s emergency declaration Thursday, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) extended its suspension of all school extracurricular activities into May.
With the extension, the earliest regular UIL activities can resume is May 4, 2020. In their announcement, UIL officials also said they will allow schools a “reasonable acclimatization period” for practices.
“We are working diligently on contingency plans to conduct state championships in each of the activities that have been suspended,” UIL executive director Dr. Charles
Breithaupt said in a press release. “While the immediate future is unclear, we are committed to providing these much-desired activities to all Texas students and will prepare for all possible outcomes, including extended school closures.”
With the concerns over COVID-19 growing every day, athletics have taken a backseat. This suspension is the third change to the original suspension that was initially to run through March 29.
