Valentine’s book folding returns to Spur library

The library will be having craft night on Monday, Feb. 7, from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m. We have had quite a few requests for book folding by people who have not been able to make it to our previous book folding classes. Since February is the month for Valentine’s Day we will fold the books into a heart shape. Everyone is invited to join us. The library will furnish the books, the patterns and the pencils. You will just need to bring a ruler with centimeters and a bone folder. We have something that will work for a bone folder if you don’t have one.

Game night’s Minute to Win It challenge proved to be a great time for all. Even the spectators were having a great time. The two teams had challenges to see which one could finish the most tasks in one minute. We had players of all ages. Halfway through the challenges it was discovered that no one was keeping score, but that didn’t slow anyone down. Everyone decided the youngest player, Iris, the declared winner. She was presented with a Frozen II make up set. She was very excited about winning.

Thanks to a $7,850 automation upgrade grant from the Tocker Foundation, the Dickens County Spur Public Library will be upgrading to a new system the first week of February. We are excited to be able to upgrade to the Apollo integrated library system and library services platform hosted by Biblionix. I believe that Apollo’s modern technology is what is needed to make the library current and inviting to the technological generation. The patron will have a role in their library experience. Through the website they will be able to reserve an item or to renew an item already checked out. The new catalog enrichment site will be inviting and easy to navigate. Our patrons will be able to access the library’s Overdrive e-book catalog through the new website. Patrons who already use the library’s Overdrive for e-books won’t have to change; they will still be able to use the Libby app. The Apollo system should be up and running within a couple of weeks.

From the funds received from the collection and development grant last spring from the Tocker Foundation we have purchased and received some new books this past week. There are two from the ever-popular bestselling author Danielle Steel. World War II brings together six remarkable young flight nurses who face the challenges of war and its many heartbreaks and victories as unsung heroes, in the inspiring novel, “Flying Angels.” Two different worlds and two very different lives collide in Paris in “The Butler.”

From Tracie Peterson, a favorite Christian fiction author of our patrons, we have “Waiting on Love.” From western fiction authors William W. Johnstone and J.A. Johnstone we have “Hunter’s Moon” and “Flintlock: Hell’s Gate.”

The Wi-fi hot spots mentioned in last week’s column are still in the works and should be available for checking out soon. Keep up with the happenings at the library on social media on our Facebook page.

Check it all out at the library.
