CINCO DE MAYO A Fiesta Pile-On dinner will be held Thursday, May 5, from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m at the Dickens County Spur Public Library, 403 E. Hill Street. Suggested donation is $10.

TEXAS WRITES, a statewide program from the Writers’ League of Texas that brings accomplished authors to rural libraries for a half day focused on the craft of writing, will be in Spur Saturday, May 14 at 10 a.m. at the Dickens County-Spur Public Library. The event will feature novelist Tex Thompson WLT director Becka Oliver. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments are provided. THE NORTHWEST TEXAS SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER NETWORK invites those involved or interested in small business ventures in Dickens County to attend a stakeholders’ meeting to learn about free grant-funded training opportunities for the local community Monday, May 16, at 6 p.m. at the Spur Senior Citizens Center. This informational session is sponsored by the Spur Area Chamber of Commerce.

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATIONS are coming up for area schools: Jayton High School, Saturday, May 20, 8 p.m., in the Auditorium; Spur High School, Saturday, May 20, 7 p.m., in the Dome Auditorium; Patton Springs High School, Saturday, May 27, 8 p.m., in the New Gym.

THE SPUR COMMUNITY CENTER is temporarily out of commission while awaiting the replacement of flooring damaged due to a recent sewer backup, according to city secretary Ashley Carothers. Alternatives have been arranged for meetings already scheduled for the new future; those looking for a place to hold a community meeting in Spur might consider the Spur Senior Citizens Center, the Dickens County Spur Museum, the Willy Room at South Plains Electrical Cooperative, or Diversions, among other options.

CAP ROCK TELEPHONE COOPERATIVE, INC. will hold its annual meeting Saturday, May 14, at 2 p.m. at the Spur School Cafetorium, 800 N. Williams St., Spur. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. with entertainment provided. There will be door prizes and refreshments after the meeting, with a 50-inch LG television as the grand prize.
