Whitefield marks 55th year at Cap Rock Telephone

Sunday, October 17 , marked Jim Whitefield’s 55th year of service with Cap Rock Telephone, and staff of the cooperative celebrated the occasion with a reception and cupcakes. (With customary modesty, of course, Whitefield didn’t call the newspaper to cover the event, so we’re reporting it thanks to insiders’ perspectives!)

Whitefield has devoted over half a century of his knowledge in the industry to help Cap Rock Telephone Cooperative, Inc. thrive. Holding the position of general manager for a total of 32 years, he has been committed to Spur and surrounding local rural communities by providing the best service possible to its members.

Whitefield was hired on as an installation repairman in 1966, when the company had a total of eight employees. He put his time in climbing telephone poles and getting service to customers in West Texas.

“He did his job and did it well,” according to the organization’s press release, then moved into the position of COE technician and worked his way up to operations manager. He was promoted to general manager in 1989.

Whitefield has seen technology change and has changed with it.

“Mr. Whitefield is a dedicated man,” according to his staff, “and we thank him for his service.”

Whitefield responded, “It’s been a good ride.”
