“When something like the Matador Tornado happens below the Cap, it affects all of us,” said Kelly Ticer, one of the owners of White River Lake Marina, “and we wanted to do what we could to help.”
More than 700 people attended the “Labor of Love” fundraiser Sept. 2 at the waterfront café and music venue, nestled in the corner of White River Lake, conveniently located between Spur, Post and Crosbyton. Cumulatively, $11,100 was raised for the Matador tornado relief effort. According to Ticer, $10,000 was raised at WRL Marina, and Jake Hooker and the Outsiders had earlier in the month raised $1,100 for Matador at Hotel Turkey in Turkey, and funds were consolidated into one donation.
Hooker, a huge draw among Western swing fans throughout the state, was the headliner for the event, but merriment joined music throughout the day, including a bake-off, a cornhole tournament, a heads-andtails bobber contest, a dunking tankandabouncehouse.
And attendees had the opportunity to also bid on one-of-a-kind items.
“We had a silent auction and a live auction, and we really appreciate all of the small towns and the vendors who contributed items for the auctions,” Ticer said.
Four other bands provided music throughout the day and evening, including Charlie Ingraham, Clay Gibson, Los Majestics and the Kipp Wilks band.
Ticer said the event would not have been the success it was without volunteers and the White River Lake Marina staff. “Among the volunteers, we are especially appreciative of Carrie and Kipp Wilks, and Katherine and Brice Bownds, who helped with the logistics in pulling this all off,” she said.
Josh and Kelly Ticer have owned White River Lake Marina since June 1, and have hit the ground running providing the area with good food and good music. Mostly notably they feature a fish fry every Friday night, and a special quail lunch on Sundays.
Speaking of delicious food, the winners of the bake-off were Jane Havens in the pie category, and Janet Bridges in the cake category.
