The Jayton Jaybirds upset the Blackwell Hornets Friday night 68 to 18 in an area playoff game that six-man football pundits are calling a “bracket buster.” (See game story on p. 6.)
The last time the Jaybirds came this far in post-season was when many of the current players were in the first or second grade.
They’ll face Grandfalls-Royalty, a consolidated school 20 miles south of Monahans on Highway 18, the road to Fort Stockton. The Grandfall-Royalty Cowboys are on an eight-game winning streak. The school, with an enrollment of 143, just opened a new K-12 facility with a construction budget of $12.2 million that voters approved in a bond election.
The two teams face off in Sterling City, a town of about 1,000, 41 miles north of San Angelo, and 119 miles south of Jayton.

There will be a pep rally/ send-off Friday at 2:15 p.m. and early release at 2:30 p.m. for travel to Sterling City.
