Thebigchangecoming for Spur’s local leadership is that longtime mayor Louise Jones won’t be running for re-election, as she told The Texas Spur recently and as most locals have known for a while.
Filing to run for Spur’s mayor will be John Schmidt, former codes enforcement officer, and Billy Spears, former police chief. The last day to file for area city councils and school boards was Friday, Feb. 14. The deadline for write-in candidates was Tuesday, Feb. 18. At press time midday Tuesday, no write-in candidates had filed.
In the City of Spur, in addition to the mayor’s position, Ward 1, Ward 2 and Ward 3 city council positions will be on the ballot. All three positions have one unopposed candidate running for them. Tom Martin has filed for Ward 1, a seat made open by Elaine Harris’s resignation. Incumbent Don Wright has filed for Ward 2 and incumbent Rhea Melton has filed for Ward 3.
The City of Dickens will have a contested mayor’s race. Incumbent mayor David Warren has filed for reelection and a challenger, Suzanne Reese has also filed for Dickens mayor. In other Dickens City Council races Nancy Hale and Jesus Zarate, both incumbents have filed for re-election. Dickens city council positions are elected at-large and these two positions are on this year’s ballot. Both will be unopposed.
The City of Jayton will have a contested mayor’s race. Currently, that position is open, and Margo Clay, mayor pro tem, has been handling the duties normally handled by the mayor. Joseph Buerkle and Cody Hall have each filed to run for mayor.
In addition, two city council seats will be on the ballot. The incumbents in those positions are Mickey Alexander and Melissa Redford. They have both filed for re-election and have drawn no opponents.
Spur ISD will also have a contested race. Kayla Bateman and Samantha Hardin have each filed to run for Place 3 on the school board, a position currently held by Terri Wyatt, the incumbent, who has also filed for re-election.
