In unofficial election results last Tuesday night, Jay Allen came out ahead 57.17% to Jerry Schmidt’s 42.83% in a months-long primary race for Dickens County sheriff runoff, according to county clerk Danay Carnes.
In the March Republican primary, Allen and Schmidt, along with Ramiro Rodriquez, had filed to run for the office currently held by Terry Braly. Sherrif Braly did not file for reelection.
Allen currently a deputy in the county sheriff’s office, took 323 of the 565 total votes cast in the March 28 results. Schmidt, a former Texas DPS trooper, garnered 242 votes.
The winner of the May 28 runoff is the presumptive winner in the November 4 primary election, barring any write-in candidate with a sufficient number of petition signatures.
