City of Dickens to have contested mayor’s race

The City of Dickens will have a contested mayor’s race. Incumbent mayor David Warren has filed for reelection and a challenger, Suzanne Reese has also filed for Dickens mayor. In other Dickens City Council races Nancy Hale and Jesus Zarate, both incumbents have filed for re-election. Dickens city council positions are elected at-large.

Spur ISD will also have a contested race. Samantha Hardin has filed to run for Place 3 on the school board, a position currently held by Terri Wyatt, the incumbent. Wyatt has filed for re-election. Incumbents Andrew the mayor’s position will be on the May 3 ballot in Spur this year, as well as the Ward 1, Ward 2 and Ward 3 city council positions.

The incumbents for those positions are Louise Jones, mayor; Don Wright, Ward 2; and Rhea Melton, Ward 3. Also on the ballot will be the Ward 1 place of Elaine Harris, who tendered her resignation in late January, leaving a short-term vacancy that will not be filled, according to Mayor Jones. Each of these are for two-year terms.

So far, Don Wright has filed for re-election for Ward 2, and Thomas Martin has filed to run for Ward 1, the seat previously held by Harris.

No candidates have filed for mayor or Ward 3.

For Jayton-Girard ISD, incumbent Andy Vargas has filed for re-election and McKenzie “Kenzie” Chisum has filed for a place on the school board. JGISD seats are all at-large. JGISD’s ballot will have the positions currently held by Steven Collins and Andy Vargas. Both are at-large positions. JGISD trustees serve twoyear terms.

In the City of Jayton, voters will be electing a new mayor. Currently, that position is open, and Margo Clay, mayor pro tem, has been handling the duties normally handled by the mayor. In addition, two city council seats will be on the ballot. The incumbents in those positions are Melissa Redford and Mickey Alexander.

Incumbent councilperson Mickey Alexander has filed for re-election. At press time, no candidates had filed for mayor.

The last day to file to run for the city councils and school boards is coming up February 14. Prospective write-in candidates have until Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2025.

Spur ISD and Jayton-Girard ISD have school board elections May 3. Patton Springs ISD holds its election in November. All three city municipalities have their elections Saturday, May 3.

The first day of early voting will be Tuesday, Apr. 22, and the last day of early voting will be Tuesday, Apr. 29.
