Election Day for city and school races in Texas Spur Country will be Saturday, May 5, 2025. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to registered voters with valid IDs.
In Spur incumbent Spur mayor Louise Jones will not run for re-election. On the ballot for Spur’s mayor will be John R. Schmidt and Billy R. Spears.
Spears told the newspaper several weeks ago that he was dropping out of the race, and he did not provide responses to the newspaper’s candidate questionnaire. However, he did not meet the deadline to officially withdraw with the elections coordinator and will still appear on the ballot.
According to city secretary Ashley Carothers, there are procedures through the Secretary of State office that apply to a situation in which a candidate in this situation who nonetheless receives a majority of votes may concede afterward.
CITY OF SPUR
In the City of Spur, in addition to the mayor’s position, Ward 1, Ward 2 and Ward 3 city council positions will be on the ballot. All three positions have one unopposed candidate running for them. Tom Martin has filed for Ward 1, a seat made open by Elaine Harris’s resignation, incumbent Don Wright has filed for Ward 2 and incumbent Rhea Melton has filed for Ward 3.
Voting in City of Spur races will be at the Spur Community Center, 502 Burlington Avenue.
SPUR ISD
Spur ISD will also have a contested race. Kayla Bateman and Samantha Hardin have filed to run for Place 3 on the school board, a position currently held by Terri Wyatt, the incumbent. Wyatt has also filed for re-election. Incumbents Andrew Adams, Place 4 and Casey Smith Place 7-At Large have also filed for re-election. Adams and Smith will be running unopposed.
Voting for Spur ISD races will be at the Spur Community Center, 502 Burlington Avenue, and McAdoo Methodist Church, Main St., McAdoo TX 79243.
CITY OF DICKENS
The City of Dickens will have a contested mayor’s race. Incumbent mayor David Warren has filed for reelection and a challenger, Suzanne Reese has also filed for Dickens mayor. In other Dickens City Council races Nancy Hale and Jesus Zarate, both incumbents have filed for re-election. Dickens city council positions are elected at-large and these two positions are on this year’s ballot. Both will be unopposed.
Voting in City of Dickens races will be at Dickens City Hall, on US 82 in Dickens.
CITY OF JAYTON
The City of Jayton will have a contested mayor’s race. Currently, that position is open, and Margo Clay, mayor pro tem, has been handling the duties normally handled by the mayor. Cody Hall and Joseph Buerkle have filed to run for mayor.
In addition, two city council seats will be on the ballot. The incumbents in those positions are Melissa Redford and Mickey Alexander. They have both filed for re-election and have drawn no opponents.
Voting for City of Jayton races will be at the JGISD school building, 700 Madison Ave., Jayton, TX 79528.
JAYTON-GIRARD ISD
Jayton-Girard ISD will have contested races. Incumbents Andy Vargas and Steven Collins have filed for re-election Both are at-large positions and are two-year terms. They have drawn two opponents, McKenzie “Kenzie”ChisumandBailey Chisum. Since these are atlarge positions, the top two vote-getters of the four candidates win the elections.
