At press time Tuesday, it appears that the only two entities holding an election in May in Texas Spur Country will be the Jayton-Girard Independent School District and the City of Dickens.
Friday was the deadline to file to run for city council or school board, and JGISD has had the following candidates file: Bailey Chisum, Cody Scott, Stephanie Allen, Cody Stanaland and Jamie (Bear) Braly. On the ballot for this year for the school board were the places of L’Rae Lee, Amanda McGee, and Cody Scott. Incumbent Cody Scott has filed for the JGISD school board, but Lee and McGee did not file for re-election this year. Five candidates have filed for the three at-large positions.
According to City Secretary Michele Fager, the City of Jayton plans to not have an election. In Jayton council seats are all at-large, but incumbents rotate through for elections every two years. On the ballot this year are incumbents Marsha Smith, Margo Clay and Teresa Benevides. All incumbents filed and drew no challengers.
The City of Spur appears to be headed toward cancelling their election. In the city of Spur the wards that are up for reelection are Ward 1, currently represented by Hope Ortiz; Ward 2, currently represented by Laidy Vasquez; and Ward 3, currently represented by Glenda White.
Kristy Price filed for Place 1, Laidy Vasquez filed for re-election in Place 2, and Landon Hinson filed for Place 3. Incumbents Hope Ortiz and Glenda White did not seek re-election.
In an email to The Texas Spur Spur City Secretary Ashley Carouthers said, “I just wanted to let you know officially we cannot cancel the election until the 23rd. I am hoping to call a special meeting, if not it will be on next month's agenda.”
For Spur ISD two places are on the ballot: Place 1, currently held by Pat Ortiz; and Place 2, currently held by Roy Sanchez. Ortiz and Sanchez filed for re-election and drew no challengers. Spur ISD appears headed to cancelling their election.
