Fire destroys unoccupied Spur home Monday afternoon

At 3:54 Monday afternoon the Spur volunteer fire department was paged to a structure fire at 615 Cowan Avenue on the east side of town, according to the department’s social media post. A neighbor reported hearing a noise like gunshots.

“A volunteer firefighter was nearby and reported heavy smoke coming from the eaves,” said Spur VFD chief Wess Abbott. “On arrival of the first truck firefighters reported heavy smoke from the entire structure. After initial investigation, firefighters discovered the entire attic to be fully involved with fire and it was determined it was not intact enough for an interior attack so firefighters went defensive fighting it from the exterior.”

Owners David and Candace Zarate told firefighters that no one had lived in the home for a long time but it did have furnishings.

“When the owners arrived on scene and saw that the interior contents were already lost,” reported Abbott, “they gave permission for the fire department to let the contents continue to burn down so that the structure would not be a collapse hazard.”

Abbott said that the cause of the fire is undetermined but suspected to be electrical issues in the attic due information from home owners and the area of origin. No injuries to persons were reported.
