The Friends of the Library,
along with Helping Hands of Dickens County, joined forces to help some of the victims of the devastating wildfires occurring in the Texas Panhandle. Dickens County resident Becky Jones had several relatives lose their homes and all of their possessions to the wildfires. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the victims of the wildfires.
Joanna Bateman is doing a wonderful job with the little ones at Story Time. Story time is for children ages up through Pre-k, but all children are welcome. It is held every Thursday morning at 10:00 at the library.
New books arrived at the library thanks to the grant received from the Tocker Foundation. From Spur award winning western author, Mark Warren, we have “A Last Serenade for Billy Bonny.” In this deeply researched novel of America’s most celebrated outlaw, Mark Warren sheds light on the human side of Billy the Kid, and reveals the intimate stories of the lesser-known players in his legendary life of crime. Warren's fictional composer and Santa Fe journalist, John Blessing, is assigned to report on a jailed prisoner who calls himself “William H. Bonney,” but what begins as a formal interview evolves into an unexpected relationship and a self-examination of Blessing’s own cultured, city values.
From another Spur award winning author, James D. Crownover, we have “Me an’ Gus,” a coming- of-age saga set in the American West.
We also have the 2023 Spur award for the best paperback western, “Dead Man’s Trail” by Nate Morgan. Former thief and wanted man Carson Stone dreams of a peaceful life on a ranch built by his own hands, but dreams don’t always come without a steep price. To earn a stake, Carson rides west to collect the reward on a claim-jumper. The land is beautiful, but times are hard as the territory is ravaged by the latest Indian war and a mining boom gone bust. When Stone steps in to defend a family ambushed by murdering marauders, he makes a terrifying discovery: one of the hired killers carries a death list full of names and dollar amounts. But the names on this list belong to upstanding citizens, not criminals. When the local sheriff is gunned down in broad daylight, Carson takes on the one job he never wanted— pinning on a lawman’s tin star to protect the innocent. A gang of ruthless killers are storming back to finish their work—and Carson Stone has just moved to the top of the death list.
Check it all out at the library.
