LIBRARY NOTES

Spur library fundraiser dinner coming up May 4

One of the most frequently asked questions at the library is not about what book we would recommend or if we have the current bestseller in large print.

Probably the most asked question is, “When are you going to have another fundraiser with a meal?”

Apparently the Friends of the Library must be pretty good cooks because people love coming to our fundraisers. The Friends of the Library will be hosting a baked potato bar with a dessert and drink for a suggested donation of $10 per plate on Saturday May 4th. The time is to be determined. The meal is made possible with donations from Lawrence Brothers Grocery store and Cap Rock Telephone Cooperative.

We will also be having a drawing the grand prize will be a $500 gift certificate donated by Salt Fork Outfitters, LLC. This gift certificated can be used for boots, jewelry, bags, clothes and other items available at Salt Fork Outfitters. Second place is a $100 Visa gift card donated by the Friends of the Library and third place is a $50 gift certificate to Lawrence Brothers Grocery donated by their new manager, C.C. Noland.

Tickets will be on sale at $5 each or six for $25 at the library or from a member of the library board. Thank you so much to all of these local merchants and citizens that support our local library.

I will be out of the library the week of April 15–18 to attend the annual Texas Library Association conference. This year the conference is being held at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in downtown San Antonio. I am looking forward to a week of learning new and exciting ways to help make our library better.

We have added a collection of short stories from awardwinning novelist Larry D. Sweazy. This is his first published short story collection and features eleven western stories, including a new short story, “A Cow Hunter’s Lament.” Three of the stories, “Rattlesnakes and Skunks,” “Lost Mountain Pass,” and “Shadow of the Crow,” are origin stories for Sweazy’s series characters Josiah Wolfe, Trusty Dawson, and Sonny Burton. The stories are traditional westerns with a few that have underlying mysteries, as well as two that have supernatural elements, all written in Sweazy’s signature atmospheric style. All of the stories feature western characters challenged by the landscape and loneliness they exist in, overcoming adversity, with a respect for history, along with plenty of expected action.
