We recently received notification from the Texas Library Association (TLA) that the Dickens County Spur Public Library is the recipient of a $1,000 Strong Texas Libraries Collection Development grant. TLA stated that thanks to the generous support from H-E-B they can provide these grants to assist libraries in enhancing their collection. We greatly appreciate this opportunity as it will allow us to purchase new books, eBooks, and audio books for the library. TLA hopes this funding will help us as we serve our community and that it will promote a love of reading and learning. We should receive the funding sometime in September.
It has been a while since we have had a craft night at the library. We will be having one on Thursday, August 9 from 4:00 until 6:30 p.m. We have moved the time because a few people would love to come, but don’t like to drive after dark. This will still give the ones who work until 5:00 time to participate as well.
We will be making wreaths made out of a frying pan splatter screen. There will be a few available. Dollar General sells them also. If you can please bring your own splatter screen and glue gun. We will also have artificial flowers and some ribbon for you to use. If you have some you would prefer using, please feel free to bring what you want. We will be using hot glue guns, so minors must have a parent or guardian present to be able to use the glue guns. These are super fun and easy to make.
The entertainment world lost a true American icon a few years ago with the passing of actress and television personality Betty White at the age of 99. “Betty White’s Pearls of Wisdom: Life Lessons from a Beloved American Treasure” is a beautiful tribute written by her friend Patty Sullivan. Patty met Betty in the late 1960s, and the Sullivans, Patty, her husband, Tom, and their two children enjoyed a rich relationship and amazing closeness through Betty’s final days.
Through Sullivan’s stories we see Betty’s fun-loving banter over a game of Scrabble, her wisdom imparted on a moonlit Christmas sleigh ride, and her passionate advocacy for all members of the animal kingdom. Betty’s uncompromising values were the authentic core of the life she lived and savored, tasting every minute along the way. “Betty White’s Pearls of Wisdom” gives you a glimpse into the personal relationship with “her Sullivans,” and the pearls of wisdom she imparted that forever transformed their lives. We now have a copy of it in large print at the library.
Some people can listen to Christmas music and read heartwarming Christmas-themed books any time of the year. If you are one of those people we have “Santa and Company” in large print by New York Times bestselling author Fern Michaels. When longtime friends Amy, Frankie, Rachael and Nina reunited for a holiday singles cruise, it not only deepened their bond, it changed their lives. Now they’re getting together for another adventure, and what better winter setting than a fabulous ski lodge? Crisp snow and fresh air by day, cozy fires and delicious food by night, capped off by meeting up with their significant others for a New Year’s Eve celebration. It’s perfect. At least, it’s perfect until Frankie decides to go snowshoeing alone. When she twists her ankle right after losing her phone in the snow, Frankie wonders how she’ll be able to summon help, only to be rescued by a reclusive Grizzly Adams lookalike who lives nearby and introduces himself as Troy Manchester. Troy saves the day by helping the injured Frankie back to the ski lodge, but in the process, encounters a part of the L.A. life he’s tried to leave behind. Nina, visiting the gift shop to buy magazines for a recuperating Frankie, is similarly shocked to glimpse someone to whom she was once connected. Even in this unlikely spot, it seems there’s no way to avoid their pasts. And as the mischievous Rachael and her sidekick Amy go to great lengths to patch up old friendships and spread the spirit of the season, the New Year may contain all kinds of new beginnings.
Check it out at the library.
