LIBRARY NOTES

Library still a reliable—free!— bargain during inflationary times

I was at the post office this morning and ran into some friends there. We were discussing just how much prices had gone up lately. One person joked they had to stop by the bank to take out a loan because they had to go to the grocery store!

It occurred to me that there is still somewhere you can go where the prices have not gone up. I said, Well, at least you can still read for free! Libraries may be hit by inflation just like every other business, but they don’t defer that cost to their patrons. We may have to apply for more grants or hit up our donors, but just like it has been for as long as I can remember you can still go to the library and check out books and other materials for free. This is one of the reasons I love what I do.

We received to remaining books donated by Galaxy Digital this week. One of them could help your child understand the voting process and the importance of their voice and participation in the voting process. “My First Election Day” by Ovenda Simon is a children’s storybook about the voting process and civic engagement for children. It is designed to teach children the voting process in an enjoyable and memorable way. Simple language and an engaging narrative make this book ideal for children aged 4-10.

Not surprising in Dickens County, we have quite a few young readers who love books about horses. Thanks to Galaxy we have “Ellie’s Pony Tail” by Isabella Monroe. It is a captivating and heartwarming novel that tells the story of Ellie Parker, a city girl who embarks on a transformative journey after moving to the countryside town of Willowbrook. Faced with the unfamiliar tranquility of her new surroundings, Ellie finds solace and strength in an unexpected friendship with Thunder, a spirited pony at Green Meadow Ranch.

For those who are a little too young to understand the voting process or able to read by themselves yet we have the board book “Can You Tickle a Turtle” by Mattia Cerato. This children’s sensory book with touch and feel trails has bright, bold, and colorful illustrations of fun creatures such as a dolphin, seal, octopus and more. It’s short and alliterative text makes for a fun read.

Thank you again to Galaxy for your generous donation! Check it all out at the library.
