LIBRARY NOTES

From ‘Origin’to OverDrive, find something new to read from the Spur library

This time of the year is a slow time for the library. Everyone is busy with holiday planning and events.

I thought now might be a good time to remind everyone about our OverDrive electronic library. I hear all of the time people saying they don’t have time to read anymore. With our OverDrive electronic library and my Libby app on my smartphone, I make time to listen to books. I listen in my car. I listen while I’m cleaning or cooking. On slow days at the library I will listen while I am working. I know some of you have said you have an account with a particular audiobook company. I used to have an account with the same company. The upside to having that account is you can get new releases faster than you can with OverDrive and Libby. The downside is—there are fees.

I have had to wait a while for a newer book, but there are so many other books to consider I can always find something that interests me. With OverDrive electronic library and the Libby app there are no fees. The only requirement is you have a valid library card. If you don’t like listening to books OverDrive also offers ebooks. You might want a smart tablet if reading an ebooks is more to your liking. It is a little difficult for me to read an ebook on a smartphone, but on a tablet it is pretty easy.

I would be glad to help anyone who would like to try out the OverDrive electronic library. Just come by the library any time we are open and we can get you started.

My mom is a big Freida McFadden fan, so I bought her a copy of her novella, “The Gift.” She said it was really good and she wanted to donate it to the library so others could read it as well. “The Gift” is a gripping Christmas-themed thrilling short story inspired by the classic O. Henry tale, “The Gift of the Magi.”

Another donated book we have recently added to our collection is “Origin,” by the author of “The Da Vinci Code,” Dan Brown. Robert Langdon, Harvard professor of symbology, arrives at the ultramodern Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to attend the unveiling of a discovery that “will change the face of science forever.” The evening’s host is Edmond Kirsch, a forty-year-old billionaire and futurist, and one of Langdon’s first students.

But the meticulously orchestrated evening suddenly erupts into chaos, and Kirsch’s precious discovery teeters on the brink of being lost forever. Facing an imminent threat, Langdon is forced to flee. With him is Ambra Vidal, the elegant museum director who worked with Kirsch. They travel to Barcelona on a perilous quest to locate a cryptic password that will unlock Kirsch’s secret.

Navigating the dark corridors of hidden history and extreme religion, Langdon and Vidal must evade an enemy whose all-knowing power seems to emanate from Spain’s Royal Palace. They uncover clues that ultimately bring them face-to-face with Kirsch’s shocking discovery…and the breathtaking truth that has long eluded us.

Check it out at the library.
