LIBRARY NOTES

New year, new books at the Spur library

HappyNewYear! A few weeks ago I wrote about the South Plains Electric Operation Round Up grant that was awarded to the library. The grant will be used for the Collaborative Summer Reading Programming, children’s books and large print books for adults.

I am pleased to say that we have a very special program set to start off Collaborative Summer Reading. On Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at 10:00 a.m., we will have a program by the Abilene Zoo. I have learned over the years that children love when animals are part of summer reading.

I mentioned in last week’s column that I listen to audiobooks on the library’s Overdrive through the Libby app on my smartphone. Sometimes I really like a narrator and will look for books they have narrated instead of books by a particular author. I had finished listening to the audiobook “Save Me from Dangerous Men” by S. A. Lelchuk. I enjoyed the book, but I really liked the narrator, January LaVoy. I searched for other books she had narrated and saw one by Nora Roberts. I had not read anything by Nora Roberts in a while, so I thought I would check this one out. It was a long audiobook. It took well over thirteen hours to finish. The novel “Hideaway” was one of those books that when you finish reading it makes you long for just a little more. Even saying that, I am glad it was not a series. It’s getting hard to find a good standalone book anymore.

We received a few large print books recently, courtesy of the South Plains Electric Community Round Up grant. “Nate, the Texas Story” (Nate Champion Duology Book # by awardwinning author Mark Warren is about one of the old west’s most heroic figures and also one of history’s best-kept secrets, Nate Champion. Nate Champion’s humble beginnings in Texas prepared him for a life with horses and cattle. Thoughawell-knownhorse trainer in his own time, he holds the simple aspiration of running his own cattle ranch, a dream he carries to Wyoming Territory as the Johnson County Range War drags him into its clutches and climaxes in one of the most impressive last stands of American history.

Also in large print we received “The Drowned” by John Banville, the renowned Booker Prize winner and nationally bestselling author of “Snow”. It is a richly atmospheric new mystery about a woman’s sudden disappearance in a small coastal town in Ireland, where nothing is as it seems.

Check it out at the library.
