It is just over a week away until our Taco Pile-on Supper here at the library! On Saturday, Mar. 15, 2025 from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m., the Friends of the Library will be hosting a taco pile on meal with a drink and dessert for a suggested donation of $10 per plate. All proceeds will benefit the Dickens County-Spur Public Library.
Don’t forget to check out our book sale that will still be going on. We had some folks from Floyd County come to our book sale last week. They were very impressed with our library. They also did not leave empty-handed. They filled several totes with all kinds of books. The gentleman said he will definitely be back because he ran out of time and still had not looked through the paperback books. They also left a nice donation to the Friends of the Library.
We received in large print by Spur Award–winning author John Shirley, “Blood in Sweet River.” Cleve Trewe has his sights set on a gorgeous piece of land into the Sierras aptly named Sweet River. It’s the perfect place to build a ranch, farm, and home for his family. Problem is, Cleve’s not the only one with his eyes on the land. A big-time cattle baron named Asa Hawthorne is prepared to use threats, intimidation and armed thugs to get what he wants. Hawthorn unleashes his deadliest henchmen including a would be gunfighter from Cleve’s past and a killer-for-hire who never misses. A major battle is brewing. And the crystal blue waters of Sweet River are about to turn red.
A few more of the DVDs we received recently from Pasqual Jimenez include “Joker,” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Robert DeNiro. Failed comedian Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) encounters violent thugs while wandering the streets of Gotham City dressed as a clown. Disregarded by society, Fleck begins a slow descent into madness as he transforms into the criminal mastermind known as Joker in director Todd Phillips’ thrilling origin story.
If comedy is more to your taste we have the hilarious buddy comedy “Heat” starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. They play a dynamite duo in the comedy from the director of “Bridesmaids,” Paul Feig. Uptight FBI special agent Sarah Ashburn (Bullock) and foul-mouthed Boston cop Shannon Mullins (McCarthy) couldn’t be more incompatible. But when they join forces to bring down a ruthless drug lord, they become the last thing anyone expected….buddies.
Check it out at the library.
