On a recent visit to Jayton I stopped in at their new coffee shop. The small-town coffee shop is as good as any of the big coffee chains in the larger cities. While there I noticed they had the sequel to Sequoyah Branham’s “In the Company of Cows.”
This contemporary western novel is called “In Between Pastures.” Branham is passionate about sharing the beauty and heartbreak of ranching. Working on ranches across Texas gives her a wide variety on experiences to draw inspiration for her characters and the obstacles they face. She enjoys long days in the saddle with good friends and her dog by her side as often as she can.
In “In Between Pastures” for the first time in her twenty-two years, Nora Kelly is finding fulfillment in more than just tending cattle. Joining the local horse club and discussing life with her Uncle Ian have brought new light to her life. Everything is going great until Ian goes to the ER and Nora’s bright new world is wrecked by two words. It’s cancer.
Checking fence turns into checking on Ian in the hospital. Rides on Nora’s colt turn to miles in the old pickup back and forth from her house to Ian’s, tending both sets of cattle.
It’s overwhelming, but Nora would much rather fake normal than grieve her uncle’s diagnosis when James, her old coworker, tries to help. She pushes him away. For how can she accept help without becoming a failure to her uncle, the strongest man she’s ever known?
